October 26 – MORGANTOWN – On Monday evening, the Monongalia County Democratic Executive Committee unanimously approved a statement urging Senator Joe Manchin, DW.V., to support the $ 3.5 trillion Build Back Better Act by President Joe Biden.

In the statement, the committee said, “We deplore the efforts of Senator Manchin to obstruct and reduce President Biden’s signing legislation. His actions so far have only served to appease his benefactors and harm voters who have voted for him in the past. “

The committee also expresses its support for the end of the filibuster and the passage of the Freedom to Vote Act and the Advancement of Voting Rights Act of John R. Lewis.

County executive committee chairman Shane Assadzandi told the Dominion Post on Tuesday that they had called an emergency meeting to discuss the matter.

“Enough is enough,” he said. “Senator Manchin has really obstructed some very positive legislation that tries to get out of this presidential administration.… It is one thing to be an independent voice and to negotiate concessions, but now whenever they give it a concession, he’s asking for something different. “

Assadzandi mentioned Manchin’s position on the child tax credit: Manchin wants a work obligation and an income limit of $ 60,000; the current limit is $ 150,000 for a couple, $ 112,500 for a single parent.

This was the committee’s first step, Assadzandi said, but more could follow. All options are on the table, including a vote of no confidence.

Regarding the filibuster, Assadzandi responded to the oft-expressed view that it encourages bipartisanship and helps small states.

He doesn’t agree, he said. “Systematic obstruction prevents both parties from passing meaningful legislation beyond the designation of a post office. … In a sense, obstruction actually prevents bipartisanship because it really spurs the party on. minority to simply block everything the majority party raises. “

Assadzandi’s farewell thought was: “We really hope Senator Manchin will do the right thing.” Mon County backed him when he was re-elected in 2018 by a narrow margin of 49.57% versus the 46.26% of challenger attorney general Patrick Morrisey – 19,397 out of 586,034 votes cast.

“If he wants the people of the state to be supported in the future,” Assadzandi said, “then he must do the right thing now and pass legislation that will improve the quality of their lives.”

Manchin’s office declined to comment on the statement.

Here is the statement in full:

Monongalia County Democratic Executive Committee fully supports Senator Joe Manchin III’s Freedom to Vote Act and any filibuster changes needed to pass it as well as John R’s Advancement of Voting Rights Act Lewis, legislation integral to the protection of the right to vote of all citizens. Democracy itself is in danger without these two bills.

We also support President Joe Biden’s Build Back Better Act. We support transformational investments in children and families, seniors and saving the planet, which will benefit everyone. Concretely, we support investments for:

– expansion of health insurance to include dental, vision and hearing care for the elderly;

– give Medicare the power to negotiate lower prices for drugs;

– universal preschool;

– investments in child care, home and community care;

– extension of tax credits for children;

– paid family leave;

– and fight definitively against climate change.

We deplore the efforts of Senator Manchin to obstruct and reduce President Biden’s signing legislation. His actions so far have only served to appease his corporate benefactors and harm voters who have actually voted for him in the past.

Senator Manchin told West Virginia that we do not have another Democrat who can be elected statewide and that he is free to do whatever he wants. Whether that’s true or not, it’s absolutely true that he’s not helping West Virginia. His attitude and his actions are reprehensible.

Democrats, Republicans and Independents in our great state must have their voting rights protected and will benefit from Build Back Better as a whole transformational. The Monongalia County Democratic Executive Committee urges Senator Manchin to pass these bills by any means necessary.
