CSK have won only three out of 10 games so far, but they are not just out of the playoff race.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) failed to live up to ongoing expectations Indian Premier League (IPL) season. They are the defending champions but haven’t played as such thanks to the mega auction that took place in February with team combinations that changed massively. Their most expensive pick, Deepak Chahar, was ruled out of action at the start of the season. It was a blow as speedy New Zealander Adam Milne also picked up an injury to be ruled out halfway though he could only play one game.

Moreover, with the CSK players retained and brought back failing to meet expectations, the team have won only three of their 10 games so far. Ravindra Jadeja was named skipper ahead of the season, but has already handed over the reins to MS Dhoni. However, the veteran couldn’t change the fortunes of the team under his captaincy with CSK winning and losing a match apiece since then. CSK’s recent defeat came against Royal Challengers Bangalore.

This significantly hurt their playoff chances. While many are excluding them from the fight for a top four spot, the four-time champions can still reach 14 points provided they win their last four matches. Moreover, the MS Dhoni-led side will need a few more results to get out of the next 17 matches in the league stage. The permutations and combinations are a bit too many for their liking, but fun things have already happened in the IPL and no team can be left out until the last moment.

One thing is for sure, CSK will only reach the fourth position if they win their last four games and the net run rate will also come into play. So not only will they have to win all four games, but CSK will also have to make sure they win at least two by a big margin.

In the meantime, here are the results of the other 13 games that need to follow CSK’s path for them to qualify for the playoffs:

First requirement: CSK will have to win their remaining four matches against DC, MI, GT and RR.

Second requirement: Below are the results listed which must go in favor of CSK for them to qualify for the playoffs.

If all matches go according to the table above, then CSK and SRH or PBKS will be tied at 14 points at the end of the league stage and the team with the best net run rate will qualify for the playoffs .
